What to buy with AFO Accessory Kit

How to customize and assemble AFO Height?

  • Slide the Calf Piece over the Posterior Strut.
  • Verify the height of the Calf Piece; the top of the Calf Piece should be approximately 3 cm below the tibial head. To reduce the length of the posterior strut, remove the Calf Piece and grind the Posterior Strut to the appropriate level. Warning: Make sure the Posterior Strut doesn’t reach the back of the knee in a seated or slightly kneeled position and does not compress the perineal artery or nerve.
  • Slide the Calf Piece over the Posterior Strut.
  • Apply slight tension on the Elastic Connection Strap and attach the PSA Hook.
  • Connect the Elastic Connection Strap using the loop.
  • Apply the tapered part (rounded edge) of the Posterior Strut Pad to the distal part of the Posterior Strut and have it cover the entire length of the Posterior Strut and the Elastic Connection Strap.
  • Attach the Calf Pad and the Calf Strap to the Calf Piece. Note: The padding is slightly larger than the Calf Piece to avoid contact between the piece and the leg.
  • Insert the device into the shoe and allow the patient to walk around for a while to verify the fit of the device. Decrease or increase padding as needed. Note: In case of point pressure at the heel bone, it is advised to apply padding under the existing padding just proximal to the pressure point (Distal calf). Remove the padding and glue additional padding to the Posterior Strut before re-attaching the padding. When the final fit has been confirmed:
  • Remove the upper part of the padding of the Posterior Strut (Fig. 6).
  • Remove the Elastic Connection Strap from the PSA Hook on the Posterior Strut.
  • Remove the Calf Piece from the Posterior Strut.
  • Slide the Shrink Tube over the Posterior Strut and Posterior Strut Pad until it covers the heel area.
  • Use a heat gun to shrink the tube to the proper size. Evenly distribute the heat to avoid burning and wrinkles. First, apply the heat to the inside of the AFO, then to the outside of the AFO.
  • Re-apply the Calf Piece, Elastic Connection Strap, and padding.
  • If necessary, remove excessive strap material with a pair of scissors. Note: For patients with lower activity levels, where the Calf Piece doesn’t move, it is advised to permanently fixate the Calf Piece by application of strong glue (Loctite 495.) into the Calf Piece before attaching it to the Posterior Strut. The Calf Piece can also be riveted to the Posterior Strut. The Elastic Connection Strap and the PSA Hook may be removed in this case.

Warnings and Cautions:

  • Make sure the strut doesn’t reach the back of the knee in a seated or slightly kneeled position and does not compress the perineal artery or nerve.
  • Patients with foot neuropathy should not use this device.
