What to buy with Rolyan Finger Splint

How to wear Rolyan Static Progressive Splint?

The splint is applied to the volar surface of the finger. The flanged area fits into the palm, and the tapered end is around the fingertip.

  1. For initial application, set the splint at the approximate degree of extension the joint is able to attain actively. With the finger extended as far as possible, measure the angle with a goniometer. Find the screw length size and degrees of extension. Use the screw length indicated. If screw needs replacing, see instructions 8 through 14.
  2. Put the splint into position on the finger to check for fit. It may be modified slightly if it is too long or if the sides of the splint extend past the circumferential mid-point of the finger.
  3. Mark trim lines as necessary and remove the splint from the finger. Trim the splint by cutting with scissors. Do not heat the splint.
  4. The self-adhesive D-ring straps should be applied, one distal and one proximal, to the flat area of the volar surface of the splint, between the ends of the plastic pieces that support the holed tabs and the oval hinge opening in the splint. Be sure that the straps will clear the hinge and the finger web spaces. Apply the straps so the closure is on the side of the finger that is more convenient for the individual. The straps may be trimmed if necessary Note: the straps may be fastened so they cross over the dorsal surface of the joint or so they are parallel to each other around the phalanges.
  5. To adjust the amount of extension provided, turn the screw into or out of the holed tabs.
  6. As the condition improves, the amount of extension provided can be adjusted by turning the screw. It is not necessary to adjust the position of the thumb nuts or the acorn nut.

Replacing screw

  1. When the condition has improved enough that the head of the screw touches the holed tab, replace the screw with a longer one. Remove the acorn nut, turn the screw out of the proximal holed tab, remove the thumb nuts, and remove the screw entirely from the splint.
  2. Hold the appropriate screw by the head. From the distal end of the splint, turn the end of the screw through the threaded metal hole in the distal tab on the volar surface of the splint. Continue turning the screw until about half of it is through the hole.
  3. Turn a thumb nut, large end first, onto the end of the screw. Position it halfway between the end of the screw and the holed tab.
  4. Turn another thumb nut, small end first, onto the end of the screw. Position it near, but not touching, the first thumb nut.
  5. Bend the splint at the oval hinge opening and turn the end of the screw through the proximal holed tab.
  6. Turn acorn nut as far as it will go on the end of the screw. Tighten the acorn nut so it is tight against the end of the screw to prevent loosening. Use a wrench or pliers if necessary.
  7. Turn the proximal thumb nut to position it close to the proximal holed tab. Turn the distal thumb nut until it nearly touches the proximal thumb nut. Grasp the two thumb nuts and turn them toward each other to lock them in place as shown below.
