Rolyan Functional Position Splint With Slot and Loop Strapping supports inflamed joints or immobilizes joints after injury or surgery. It features straps that are laced through slots in the pan portion of this 1/8 inch (3.2mm) Polyform splint to maintain desired finger positioning.

How to Use Rolyan Splint With Slot And Loop Strapping?

Fit:


  • The splint can be modified for a better fit.
  • The splint should cover two-thirds of the length of the forearm.
  • The splint should clear bony prominences, and it should not impinge the thumb web space
  • The proximal edge of the splint can be flared for increased comfort

Modification:


  • To trim or modify these splints, which are made from 1/8" (3.2mm) Polyformsplinting material, spot-heat the splint with a heat gun or in a heat pan of water at a temperature of 150° to 160°F (65° to 70°C) for one minute or until pliable.
  • Heating the entire splint may cause it to lose its preformed shape.
  • Polyform has a high degree of drapefor better results when modifying the material, shape it with stroking movements.
  • Note: Be careful not to heat the splint near the strapping or the plastic base for the slot-and-loop strapping.

Strapping

  • Put the splint into position by sliding the fingers under the elastic strapping.
  • If necessary, adjust the slot-and-loop strapping for proper fitfeed it through the slotted plastic base on the underside of the splint to increase or decrease the amount of strapping needed to secure each finger
  • Attach the two hook tabs to the ulnar and radial borders of the hand portion of the splint.
  • Attach the elastic strap to the hook tabs
  • Attach forearm and thumb straps.
  • If desired, trim strap length.
  • An additional strap may be placed across the wrist for increased support.

Care And Cleaning:


  • The splint will lose its shape in temperatures over 135°F (57°C) - It should be kept away from sources of heat such as ovens, hot water, open flames, and sunny car windows
  • The splint may be cleaned with soap and lukewarm water.
  • The straps may be washed with soap and water, but the adhesive portion should not be moistened.
  • The splint and straps should be allowed to dry thoroughly before reapplication of the splint.

Contraindications:


  • Not for the acute phase of most wrist or hand fractures.
  • Not for use directly over open wounds and infected areas.

Precautions:



  • These splints are to be fitted initially by a healthcare professional who is familiar with the purpose for which they are prescribed.
  • The healthcare professional is responsible for providing wearing instructions and precautions to other healthcare practitioners, care providers involved in the patients care, and the patient.
  • If unusual swelling, skin discoloration or discomfort occurs, use should be discontinued and a healthcare professional consulted.
  • Be careful that the straps are not so tight that they interfere with circulation.
  • After heating thesplinting material, always check its temperature before applying it to the patient.
