Instructions For Use
Modification:
These splints, which are made from 3.2mm Polyform® splinting material, can be modified for a better fit. Heat the area to be modified using a heat gun or water that is heated to 150° to 160°F (65°C to 70°C) for one minute or until pliable.

  • Heating the entire splint may cause it to lose its preformed shape.
  • Polyform has a high degree of drape-for better results when modifying the material, shape it with stroking movements.
  • Do not heat any of the splints near the rivet that holds the straps in place. Do not heat the Anti-Spasticity Ball Splint with Slot & Loop Strapping near the strapping or the plastic base of the slot-and-loop strapping.

Finger Strapping:
Preformed Anti-Spasticity Ball Splint
Hand-Based Anti-Spasticity Ball Splint
Dorsal Anti-Spasticity Ball Splint

  • For patients with tight finger or wrist flexors, position the Dorsal Anti-Spasticity Ball Splint upside down and parallel to the forearm, with the hand portion of the splint next to the forearm. Slip the fingers and thumb through the cut-out area and use the forearm of the splint as a lever to place the splint onto the dorsal surface of the patients forearm.

Anti-Spasticity Ball Splint with Slot & Loop Strapping

  • Put the splint into position by sliding the fingers under the elastic strapping. If necessary, adjust the strapping for proper fit-feed it through the slotted plastic base on the underside of the splint to increase or decrease the amount of elastic needed to secure each finger.
  • Attach two self-adhesive hook pieces to the ulnar and radial borders and secure the ends of the strapping to them.

  • Apply the two long straps as appropriate.
  • The Preformed Anti-Spasticity Ball Splint and the Anti-Spasticity Ball Splint with Slot & Loop Strapping include soft foam padding, which may be placed on the straps for increased comfort.

Wrist Strapping:
Hand-Based Anti-Spasticity Ball Splint
Anti-Spasticity Ball Splint with Slot & Loop Strapping

  • These splints include a padded Polyform wrist brace, which may be heated (see Modification) and molded to the hand. Place it on the dorsal surface of the wrist with the longer edge placed distally and the padded side toward the skin. Mold it to the wrist. Position the wrist stabilizing strap, threaded through the padded brace, around the wrist.

Care And Cleaning:

  • The splint will lose its shape in temperatures over 135°F (57°C). It should be kept away from sources of heat such as ovens, hot water, open flames, and sunny car windows.
  • The splint may be cleaned with soap and lukewarm water. The straps may be washed with soap and water, but the adhesive portion should not be moistened. The splint and straps should be allowed to dry thoroughly before reapplication of the splint

Precautions:

  • These splints are to be fitted initially by a healthcare professional who is familiar with the purpose for which they are prescribed. The healthcare professional is responsible for providing wearing instructions and precautions to other healthcare practitioners, care providers involved in the patients care, and the patient.
  • If unusual swelling, skin discoloration or discomfort occurs, use should be discontinued and a healthcare professional consulted.
  • Be careful that the straps are not so tight that they interfere with circulation.
  • After heating splinting material, always check its temperature before applying it to the patient.

Contraindications:

  • Not in the presence of wrist or hand fractures
  • Not for use with severe edema
  • Not for use over open wounds and infected areas
