How does Diabetes Test Strips work?

  • When a drop of blood is put on the test strip, glucose in the blood reacts with glucose oxidase to produce gluconic acid.
  • A current is transferred by the meter to the other end of the test strip.
  • Electric terminals on the glucose monitoring strips allow the meter to calculate the current between the terminals.
  • Current between the terminals is changed according to the level of gluconic acid produced.
  • Then, an algorithm is used by the blood glucose meter to calculate the blood glucose level based on the difference in current.
