What is Golfers Elbow?

Medial epicondylitis - also known as Golfers Elbow is a common injury to individuals engaged in activities that apply stress to the forearm. Medial epicondylitis is similar to lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) however it occurs on the inside of the elbow rather than the outside. Anyone who is engaged in activities where there is repetitive gripping can develop this ailment.

Symptoms: Characterized by pain and tenderness on the inner side of the elbow where the tendons of the forearm muscles attach to the bony bump on the inside of the elbow (medial epicondyle). Sometimes the pain extends along the inner side of the forearm and to the wrist. Its not limited to golfers. Individuals who repeatedly use their wrists or clench their fingers also can develop golfers elbow. Golfers elbow is similar to tennis elbow, however, tennis elbow occurs on the outside of the elbow. Characteristics of Golfers elbow include pain and tenderness, elbow stiffness (making a fist may cause pain), weakness in your hands or wrists, numbness or tingling that may radiate into one or more fingers. The pain can come on suddenly or gradually and may worsen with gripping activities.

What Causes Golfers Elbow: Excess or repetitive stress to the muscles and tendons in the upper forearm and elbow. Its often caused by the gripping or swinging of golf clubs incorrectly or too forcefully, racket sports especially using excessive topspin or a racket thats too small or heavy; throwing sports, due to improper pitching or throwing technique or weight training.
