Many medical conditions, circumstances, unfortunate instances, or surgeries can lead to the use of catheter supplies. Urinary catheters are soft silicone or latex tubes used to empty the bladder. One of the ends of the tube is inserted into the bladder, and the other has a drain bag attached to it, where the urine is collected from the bladder.

What are Catheter Supplies?

For a safe and sterile catheter insertion, you require quality supplies. These catheter supplies can include -

Who should use Urinary Catheter Supplies?

Catheters are generally used in cases where the bladder or urethra, or both, are partially or completely blocked for a short period or permanently as a result of an injury, surgery, or disease.

Depending on your requirements, physicians and urologists prescribe different types of catheters, including intermittent catheters, foley catheters, or external condom catheters.

Buying Guide for Catheter Supplies?

1. Types of Urinary Catheters

There are three main types of urinary catheters available at Rehab Store, you can pick a type depending on your doctor’s suggestion -

  • Intermittent Catheters

These are also known as in and out catheters and uncoated catheters since they need lubricants for catheter insertion. Using these eliminates the need for having a catheter bag.

Intermittent catheters are generally used for patients with acute or chronic bladder problems. Bladder dysfunction is caused due to an injury, underlying medical condition, or surgery.

People with physiological defects in bladder structure, urinary incontinence, multiple sclerosis, peripheral neuropathy, or post-operative complications are often prescribed these urinary catheters.

  • Indwelling Catheters

An indwelling urinary catheter, also known as a foley catheter, comes with a catheter and retention balloon inserted via the urinary tract or suprapubically for urine drainage that is collected in a drainage bag and disposed thereof.

Foley catheters come as a part of a closed catheter drainage system, which is an aseptic kit in which the urine drainage path, i.e., the tip of the catheter inside the bladder to the bag, which passed the urine out of the body, is closed.

The structure is not meant to be disconnected to eliminate the chances of the urinary tract getting infected with bacteria that may be present in the catheter tubes and the collection bag.

  • Condom Catheters

Condom Catheters are a celebrated alternative to intermittent catheters due to their simple yet effective functioning. These are most commonly used when the person has a degree of mobility required to perform incontinence care independently. Apart from this, a condom catheter, also known as an external catheter, can efficiently be used for -

  • an overactive bladder
  • dementia
  • injuries that affect mobility,
  • alcohol withdrawal syndrome,
  • when using an internal catheter is not viable (in cases of chronic urinary tract infection or bladder stones)

2. Reason for using a catheter

There can be varied reasons for using a catheter. Choosing a urinary catheter and other catheter supplies extensively depends on the reasons for use and the situation of the patient. The duration for use of catheter is also considered material while looking for urological supplies.

3. Catheter Sizing

Catheters are sized in a universal unit known as French Size or Fr. It is used to measure all types of catheters. Urinary catheters are chosen after considering the cathing tubes' external diameter. With the increase in the Fr number, the tube diameter also increases.

Therefore, to figure out foley catheter size in French size (FR) - multiply the diameter in millimetres by 3. For instance, if the diameter is 4.7mm multiplied by 3, the catheter size would be 14 FR in size.

4. Type of Drainage Bag

Catheter bags improve the quality of care for the patient and makes it easier for the caregiver to deal with the waste. Urinary bags come in two types - bedside drainage bags and urine leg bags.

  • Bedside drainage bags hang from the bedside or a wheelchair for overnight protection from leakage and soiling. These are used for hospitalized patients, bedridden residents, people dealing with incontinence and are primarily used for night-time usage.
  • Leg bags come with straps to stick the drain bag to the thigh or leg of the user. These are designed for daytime usage by active users. These urine leg bags are connected to the catheter and attached to the inside thigh or calf using Velcro or elastic straps. It is important to note that the leg bag must be placed lower than the bladder to prevent urine reflux back into the bladder.
