How to use Rolyan Dorsal Wrist Splint?

The splint blank can be applied to either hand simply invert the splint blank.
  • Pad bony prominences as necessary.
  • Heat splint blank in water heated to approximately 160°F (70°C) until pliable.
  • Remove from heat pan and place on a towel on a flat surface. Blot excess water.
  • If possible, place patients hand in pronation to achieve a gravity-assisted position.
  • Standing in front of the patient, place the splint blank on the dorsum of the hand, with the hand through the kidney-shaped cutout and the wider end of the cutout near the thumb.
  • Put the digits through the distal cutout, making sure that the extended portion of the volar surface of the cutout is pointing proximally.
  • Fold back the radial and ulnar sides of the hand portion of the splint.
  • Mold the splint blank on the forearm.
  • The splint can be trimmed and the edges flared if necessary.
  • Apply appropriate straps.

Precautions:
  • This splint is to be fitted initially by a healthcare professional who is familiar with the purpose for which it is prescribed. The healthcare professional is responsible for providing wearing instructions and precautions to other healthcare practitioners, care providers involved in the patients care, and the patient.
  • If unusual swelling, skin discoloration or discomfort occurs, use should be discontinued and a healthcare professional consulted.
  • Be careful that the straps are not so tight that they interfere with circulation.
  • After heating splinting material, always check its temperature before applying it to the patient.

Care and Cleaning:
  • The splint will lose its shape in temperatures over 135°F (57°C). It should be kept away from sources of heat such as ovens, hot water, open flames, and sunny car windows.
  • The splint may be cleaned with soap and lukewarm water. The straps may be washed with soap and water, but the adhesive portion should not be moistened. The splint and straps should be allowed to dry thoroughly before reapplication of the splint.
