Rolyan Pre-Cut Sampler Kit A is intended to be used for the fabrication of custom-molded rigid splints, orthoses, and adaptive equiptment. The Wrist and Thumb Spica Splint is intended for immobilizing the wrist and CMC and MCP joints of the thumb. The splint may be used for deQuervains syndrome, MCP joint collateral ligament injury, gamekeepers thumb and acute arthritis, and following CMC or MCP joint replacement.

Contraindications:
  • Not in the presence of severe edema
  • May not be recommended for the acute phase of wrist fractures

Precautions:
  • This splint is to be fitted initially by a healthcare professional who is familiar with the purpose for which it is prescribe
  • If unusual swelling, skin discoloration or discomfort occurs, use should be discontinued and a healthcare professional consulted
  • Be careful that the straps are not so tight that they interfere with circulation
  • After heating splinting material, always check its temperature before applying it to the patient
  • When opening bag after heating material, avoid contact with hot vapors from bag

Care And Cleaning:
  • The splint will lose its shape in temperatures over 135°F (57°C)
  • It should be kept away from sources of heat such as ovens, hot water, open flames, and sunny car windows
  • The splint can be cleaned with soap and lukewarm water and allowed to dry thoroughly before reapplication

Procedure:
  • Splints made from AirThru material:
    • These splint blanks fit the right or left hand
    • The splint blank can be applied to either hand
    • Simply invert the splint blank

  • Heat splint blank as follows:
    • Splint blanks made from AirThru material -Soften these splints, which are packaged in a heat-sealed plastic bag, in heat pan of water at a temperature of 160° to 170°F (70°-75°C) for approximately 2 to 3 minutes
    • Cut open bag between heat seal and pressure-sensitive strip
    • If reheating is necessary, return splint blank to bag, close pressure-sensitive seal completely, and heat
    • If possible, place patient's hand in supination to achieve a gravity-assisted position
    • Place splint blank in palm with the thumb piece over the radial side of the thumb
    • Wrap the thumb piece circumferentially around the proximal phalanx of the thumb 
    • Mold the splint to the forearm
  • The thumb piece can be left free to accommodate fluctuation in edema or bonded to the splint base as follows:
    • If the splinting material is coated to prevent accidental bonding, remove the coating by scraping the surface or brushing it with an acetone material
    • The best bond can be achieved by dry heating the material (such as with a heat gun)
    • While still warm, place the pieces together carefully they will bond instantly
    • The splint can be trimmed and the edges flared if necessary
    • Apply appropriate straps
