Aquatic Therapy: Let’s Get Wet!!

Aquatic Therapy: Let’s Get Wet!!

By Kevin Cleary

Sometimes after an injury or illness, physical therapy may be required. There are many different tools available to your physical therapist to help you recover from your injuries. For someone who has just suffered an injury, physical therapy itself can be uncomfortable therefore forcing your physical therapist to shift their focus to the pool. By utilizing a pool your therapist can use the unique properties of water to effectively develop a physical therapy program and start the road to recovery. This can help almost all patients to regain their mobility and quality of life.

Aquatic Therapy

Water Can Help

On dry land gravity is the force that is constantly pulling us down. This puts the burden of our entire body weight to be supported by; you guessed it, our bodies. Depending on the nature of your injury and its location, this burden can lead to discomfort and even pain. If your physical therapist determines that you would benefit from aquatic therapy, some of this gravitational pull can be negated. While gravity pulls us in just one direction (downward), water applies pressure in every direction including upward which creates buoyancy. This can help support the weight of our body and reduce the stress on injured body parts.

How Does It Work?

Aquatic therapy can be used for many different exercises and is extremely beneficial for those recovering from an injury. Not only does water create buoyancy but it also provides gentle resistance while supporting you. A great example is aerobics. On land aerobics has proven to be an effective method of exercise but can be hard on someone who is injured. Water aerobics lessen the impact on the body and the water provides more resistance than on land. The Cando Aquatic Exercise Kit is specifically designed to provide the same work out you would get on dry land but without the impact on joints and muscles. The standard kit includes a jogger belt, hand bars, and posters while the deluxe model adds ankle cuffs. The Thera-Band Aquafins Aquatic Exercise Kit allows the user the flexibility to use the santoprene rubber cuffs on the wrist or ankles for full-body exercising. For help designing a water workout, the Aquajogger Complete Water Workout DVD provides the latest exercise combinations, training ideas, and even advanced workout techniques. It provides water workouts for shallow or deep water and helps strengthen muscles, improve aerobic conditioning, and increase flexibility all while taking advantage of the benefits of water.

Jogging in Water Is Better

Aquatic TherapyWe all know the benefits of running to our overall health, but that comes at a cost. The constant pounding our joints, muscles, and ligaments endure while jogging can lead to pain or injury. The stress on these joints and muscles is alleviated while exercising in the pool. We can even increase the effectiveness of these workouts by increasing the resistance. The AquaJogger Aquarunners RX Water Resistance Footwear are made of chlorine resistant EVA foam and easily slip on and adjusts to the width of every foot. Another option to help increase the effectiveness of running in water is the Cando Aquatic Ankle Cuffs. They weigh very little on land, but in the water they add resistance to leg exercises and are perfect for aquatic therapy. The All-Pro Aqua Power Aquatic Ankle Weights are another way to increase the effectiveness of moving in water. Their exclusive design keeps weights away from ankles and allows full freedom of movement while allowing weight to be added or subtracted for a progressive workout. To maintain buoyancy and proper position while exercising, a jogger belt is a good option. The Cando Aquatic Jogger Belt is chlorine resistant and the adjustable formfitting belt fits comfortably. The AquaJogger Active Belt suspends the body vertically in water while supporting and strengthening the lower back for a comfortable effective workout.

Is There Workout Equipment for the Pool?

When we go to the gym is very common to use treadmills or stepper machines in order to get a great workout, but what do we do when we would like to combine the benefits of an exercise machine and the buoyancy of water? The H2O Gym Underwater Treadmill 601/602 Aquatic Exercise Equipment is perfect for extending gait training to promote muscle strength as well as aquatic rehabilitation for injury or knee/hip replacement while the H2O Gym Stepper and Twister Aquatic Exercise Equipment combines the aerobic benefits of a stepper with the core training and flexibility of a twister. For those with chronic issues such as MS or fibromyalgia, the H2O Gym Flip N Go Aquatic Stepper is a great calorie burning exercise for faster rehab and gait improvement.
