Instructions for Use

  • Product Storage:
-Each roll of Soft Cast is packaged in a sealed foil pouch
     - Care should be taken to avoid puncturing the pouch as this will cause the roll to cure prematurely in the package
     - Soft Cast should be stored in a cool, dry atmosphere
     - Extremes of temperature and humidity should be avoided

  • Precautions:
-The uncured polyurethane resin in Soft Cast will adhere to unprotected skin and clothing
     - Protective examination or surgical gloves should be worn while applying the roll
     - Care should be taken to avoid contacting unprotected areas of skin of the patient during application
     - Swabbing lightly with alcohol may help in removing resin from the skin, if done immediately
     - Prolonged or too frequent wetting of the wrapped extremity without adequate drying can lead to skin maceration or other complications

  • Flammability:
     - As defined by NFPA Standard #702-1975 and Flammable Fabrics Act (CS-191-153), a finished Soft Cast will not support combustion under normal circumstances
     - Avoid open flames.

  • Application Instructions:
    1. Slip one layer of 3M™ Synthetic Stockinet over the affected body part. Additional padding may be used for greater protection of pressure points and bony prominences. When used as a compression wrap, 3M™ Synthetic Cast Padding should be applied over the entire area to be wrapped
    2. Gloves must be worn while wrapping Soft Cast, since the resin will transfer or adhere to the skin
    3. Open only one roll of Soft Cast at a time, since room humidity will initiate cure
    4. Immerse the roll in room temperature water (70-75ºF).
Note: Three firm squeezes of the roll while submerged will give a set time of approximately 3 minutes. To lengthen the set time, immerse the roll and remove it immediately without squeezing. This technique will give a set time of approximately 4 minutes. Without squeezing the material at least once while submerged in the water, there may be a decrease in slipperiness. Warmer water shortens the set time while cooler water lengthens it
    5. Wrap spirally, overlapping the previous layer by one-half to two-thirds the width of the roll. To ensure a snug fit, wrap with slight tension on the roll, taking care to avoid excessive tightness. Avoid stretching the last 8-12 inches of material
    6. The amount of support desired can be determined by the number of layers used. The more layers used, the more supportive the wrap.
    7. Smooth and rub the surface to achieve good contact between layers. Soon after smoothing, the wrap can be molded. About 3-5 minutes after immersion in the water, Soft Cast is sufficiently cured to prevent further molding
    8. Allow about 10 minutes before letting the patient resume activities.
    9. Should additional layers be desired after the initial wrap has set, an additional roll should be overlapped on itself to achieve good bonding.

  • Removal:
Soft Cast can be unwrapped, cut off with bandage scissors, or removed with a traditional cast saw. If a cast saw is used, care should be taken to avoid injury to the patient especially when a small amount of under padding has been used.
